Tips to Aging Healthy

As you grow older, you change. Your body behaves in a way that it didn’t before. Don’t let these changes get you by surprise. You can live a full life, and enjoy it.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT TO CHANGE BECAUSE OF AGING

Circulatory and Respiratory System 

The circulatory system transports blood throughout your body. It contains the heart and blood vessels: veins, arteries and capillaries. The respiratory system allows air to enter your lungs to diffuse and enter into your bloodstream to be transported to your organs.

As a person ages, your blood vessels may stiffen, meaning your heart will have to work harder to pump blood. Your heart needing to work harder can lead to high blood pressure.

High blood pressure often does not have any symptoms; however, it left untreated, conditions such as heart disease and stroke can happen.

 

Nervous, Endocrine and Immune System

The nervous system has two main parts: central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system (CNS). This is the main control center for your body, and it processes any actions and reactions you have.

The peripheral nervous system brings messages to the CNS and from the CNS to the body’s muscles.

The endocrine system uses chemicals to send messages throughout your body.

The hypothalamus, thalamus and pituitary gland are the main organs found in the endocrine system.

When you get older, your flexes are not what they used to be. While not everyone gets dementia, cells in the brain can, and nerves can be damaged by plaque and entanglements, which may lead to dementia.

 

Digestive and Excretory System

The digestive system brings food into the body and breaks it down for nutrients. The excretory system eliminates the waste from the body after the digestive system breaks it down. The excretory system also houses the kidneys, which clean your blood.

As you get older, your digestive tract may become more firm, which can lead to constipation, stomach pain and nausea.

 

Sensory System

As you get older, you may notice that you can’t see or hear very well. You may also start to lose your sense of taste. Your sensory system, which is a part of your nervous system, is responsible for processing your sensory information.

If your vision changes, you may not be able to read medication, walk up or down stairs, drive or cross the street without difficulty.

If you’re hearing changes, your ability to communicate could be impaired, leaving you feeling isolated, depressed or having low self-esteem. It is also a safety hazard including not hearing proper instructions, not hearing a car coming or a doorbell ring.

 

TIPS TO AGING HEALTHY 

Aging healthy can be easy. There are many things that you can do to keep your body and mind working.

  • Circulatory and Respiratory System:To combat high blood pressure, try to stay active. Doing aerobics activities such as walking, running, swimming, biking and even gardening and doing chores can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your blood pressure down.
  • Nervous, Endocrine and Immune System:To combat changes in your brain, always keep learning. You can take lessons at your nearby community center, read books, write poetry or do the daily crossword puzzle.
  • Digestive and Excretory System: To keep the digestive and excretory system healthy, drink plenty of water and eat healthy. You may also notice that your mouth has become drier. Your teeth, which is a part of your digestive tract, can start to decay. Protect your mouth, and decrease the risk of gum disease, by practicing dental hygiene.
  • Sensory System: It is really important that you have regular vision and hearing screening. While outside, protect your eyes from the sun.

September is Healthy Aging Month, an annual health observance designed to focus national attention of growing older.

It’s never too late to find a new sport, passion or hobby. You can have the ability to travel and explore new, beautiful places.
