ABOUT WV CARING
WV Caring is a 501 ©️ (3), non-profit organization that was founded in 1983 by the North Central West Virginia community that it serves: Barbour County, Broxton/Calhoun/Gilmer Counties, Marion County, Monongalia County, Pocahontas County, Preston County, Randolph County, Taylor County, Tucker County and Wetzel County. It is one of the few not-for-profit, stand-alone advanced illness care providers serving the area.
WV Caring fills unmet patient care needs by taking on complicated diagnoses, making sure hospice pediatric care is available to the communities it serves, and more services that are not provided by other end-of-life care providers.
We want our patients to “embrace life.” We do this to ensure the right care is provided at the right time. And, to empower patients and their families to have the services they want, honors their dignity and to avoid unproductive medical interventions. It is designed to help people to live more comfortably and fully as possible.
WV Caring’s mission is to improve care for those facing life-limiting illness through direct support of patients and their families, public education and public advocacy.
At WV Caring, our goals include:
- To improve the quality of life for people with an incurable illness by managing their pain and other symptoms, so they can be as comfortable as possible and make the most of their time for as long as possible, however long that may be.
- To provide a seamless and complete program of care, which includes: management of pain, physical support, spiritual support, psychological support and social support.
- To support families and caregivers with education, counseling, respite care so they can understand, prepare for and support each other through a final illness. This allows everyone to spend time focusing on the important things in their lives.
Our goals are measured through our core values:
- Complete Customer Satisfaction
- Culture of Trust
- Develop Leadership
- Learners and Teachers
- Financial Stewardship

WV CARING ADVOCATES FOR THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE
In 1983, a group of volunteers in Preston County understood that people living with life-limiting illnesses needed care. Their tireless work led to hiring WV Caring’s first paid employee and Founding President, Ms. Malene Smith Davis. And, under her leadership she led the expansion of care into eleven more counties for WV Caring, formerly Hospice Care Corporation, to become one of the oldest and largest non-profit hospices in West Virginia. Her trail-blazing work coincided with America’s leading policymakers more than 36 years ago ensuring that West Virginians received hospice care through the Medicare Hospice Benefit.
Today, as WV Caring’s Founding President, and Chief Visionary Officer Malene is known nationally for her work in advocating for excellent end-of-life care.
Whether you are living with a progressive illness, or you are caring for someone who is, we at WV Caring understand just how challenging this can be. You can call us anytime to request more information about care, and we’re easy to access.
